In the first assignment
I posted Merlí as a good teacher. Merlí is a philosophy teacher in a Spanish Netflix
series. He provokes the experience when he teaches, he creates enthusiasm and
motivates students. He connects the new knowledge with the teenagers´ real life
and bonds with them. Quoting Smith and Smith, he somehow brings learning to
life, he encourages reflection and helps his students respond to situations
according to learnt stuff.
But he doesn´t achieve
this with every student, some dislike him. Some feel connected and accompanied
and some feel repelled.
He is a charismatic
teacher, according to the three main discourses of Alex Moore. There´s too much
emphasis in his performance. He´s like the star of the classroom. He doesn´t
like to collaborate with other colleagues, although he sometimes does.
He acts as a pedagogue
of Ancient Greek society when he involves with a student in such a way that accompanies
him in a psychologic special situation. His practice reflects Noddings
considers the basis for teaching activity and this is caring relations. He
listens to their students, and engages with them.
Although he inspires,
listens and has the knowledge he doesn´t seem to be interested in becoming a
good teacher. He shows no willing to learn nor to reflect on his practice. This
is quite an irony when we know he is a philosophy teacher where reflection is a
key competence.
